Haemorrhoids and Anal Fissures: Similar Symptoms, Different Problems

Rectal pain, bleeding, and itching can be worrying. Many people assume these symptoms mean the same condition, but haemorrhoids and anal fissures are quite different. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right treatment.

What Are Haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins inside or around the anus. They often develop from straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation, pregnancy, or sitting for long periods. Common signs include bright red blood on tissue, itching, and a soft lump near the anus. Pain is usually mild unless a clot forms.

What Are Anal Fissures?

An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anal canal. Hard stools are the usual cause. The hallmark symptom is sharp, burning pain during and after passing stool, sometimes lasting hours. You may also notice a little bright red blood.

Managing Both Conditions

Treatment for both begins at home. Eat more fibre, drink plenty of water, and avoid straining. Warm baths soothe discomfort, while creams can ease pain and swelling. Fissures may need prescription ointments, and severe haemorrhoids sometimes require minor procedures.

Final Thoughts

Although the symptoms overlap, the causes and treatments differ. Do not ignore rectal bleeding, because it can signal other serious conditions. If symptoms last more than a week or worsen, see a doctor promptly.
